The Android operating system for mobile devices is the second most
popular OS by popularity, number of users and number of apps on the
marketplace. The only competitor that is ahead is the Apple iPhone, and
that is understandable, as that device has sparked the current smart
phone revolution.
Anyone from any line of work can find something useful on the Android apps marketplace, and as you may know, third party extensions are the most important thing that can define the fate of any platform. If you have an operating system that doesn’t run any useful third party apps and can’t open documents created by another company or software, it will undoubtedly fail.
Android has borrowed the best from Apple’s business model as well as from the Linux (on which it is based) open source and free philosophy, that is why a lot of developers and users think that it is the best product on the mobile operating system arena.
The apps collection range from alarms, task managers, web browsers to music players, various useful apps and games. Games have been the last obstacle for Android on the path to a universal mobile OS, mainly due to the lack of proper graphics drivers and slow mobile graphics chips.
Nowadays, there are a lot of beautiful games for Android in any category, from strategy and RTS to First Person Shooters and Racing. In this article I’ll focus on the last category and will show you a list of the best racing games available for the Android OS.
Asphalt 3 Street Rules HD
The Asphalt series of games are the most popular racing games available for the iPhone. And now Android users can enjoy the same high quality graphics and controls on their phones. You play as an underground street racer and get to choose and race a lot of great cars and bikes, while having to avoid the police and have your exploits filmed live by TV helicopters.
Light Racer 3D.
This is just one of the many versions of the futuristic races at light speeds a la Tron. This one has some of the best graphics and great controls, and while the gameplay is somewhat familiar and overdone, it’s still very interesting to play.
Wave Blazer.
In this game, you are racing boats! Not only simple ones with propellers or even jets, but futuristic boats that go way faster than anything you’ve ever seen. The maps and backgrounds are pretty nice, the boats are detailed and the controls are as great as the best accelerometer controlled games – the game’s got everything you need in order to fully enjoy it and replay it many times.
Raging Thunder.
This is another great racing game that puts you behind the wheel of a sports car. You can then race across a lot of detailed roads and landscapes, beating your opponents. There’s nothing more to be said about it, this game is just as good as Asphalt, except maybe for the smaller number of tracks and lack of bikes. Check it out and decide for yourself which one is the best.
Speed Forge 3D.
Speed Forge 3D is another variation on racing games. This time you are put behind the wheel of a futuristic machine participating in illegal races on Mars. As the machine was previously used for mining, it has an arsenal of mines and explosives installed on it, which you can use to damage your opponents and reach the finish line first. This game was known as Project Chronos before release, and it’s a very nice game. The graphics, sounds, backgrounds, vehicles and physics are all top notch – just what you’d expect from a modern game. And because it costs only $3, you really don’t have any excuse for not trying it out.
XRace.
This isn’t really one of the best games, but it is the first game for Android, and it marked an important step in the development of 3D games and drivers for Android devices. You owe it to the developers to check it out .
There are a lot of other great games available for the Android operating system, just do a search for them. A lot of new games are also coming out this and the following months, so there will surely be no shortage of them (there have been over 9000 new apps released this March, and that says a lot). The graphics and controls are also improving, and soon we’ll be looking at PS2 and Xbox quality games on your Android phone in your pocket.
